We have received the program of the “Montevideo Basque Film Festival,” entitled “A Basque Look at the World” that begins this afternoon in Montevideo at the Uruguay Cinemateca (Cinematech), thanks to the Aldaxka Basque cultural group.  The documentary Amerikanuak by Nacho Reig (2010) will kick off the festival and present the reality of Basque emigration to Elko, NV, in the United States. The festival will run through next Sunday December 14.

Montevideo, Uruguay.   Anyone interested in the Basque culture and film fans in general will have the opportunity, through Sunday, an opportunity to see Basque cinematographic production of the last decade, organized at the Uruguayan Cinemateca with the help of Aldaxka.  Each one of the full-length films will be shown at least twice, on different days, so that the most people can view them.

In the words of the organizers, the works that can be seen in Montevideo “revolve around the Basque people and their searches, their political struggles for independence (Gazta zati bat), defense of human rights (Barrura Begiratzeko Lehiok, nun da popo?), the defense of their language and their identity (Bertsolari), their culture in the Diaspora (Amerikanuak).  And “the fictions that are shown in various recent films from black comedy in (Aupa Etxebeste, and Urte berri on amona)  to drama (Amaren Eskuak) to the vanguard, and hard to classify (Emak Bakia), or the historical drama narrated as an animation (Gartxot).

“The Aldaxka community hopes to introduce Uruguayans to the voice of Basques in their language, through their worldview, intimately and openly, with its pains and sense of humor, hopes, failures and obstinate struggles,” as the presentation in the program reads.
