Today, August 1, 2018, our associate María Irene Olarreaga Gallino passed away, a Basque illustrious in Salto and benefactor of the local culture.

In December 1963 she and her husband, Luis J. Armstrong donated to the departmental government the current building of the Museum of Fine and Decorative Arts. In 1999 the Museum was declared a National Historic Monument. In 2003, this jewel of Salto's cultural heritage was given her name.

In 2014, she was declared an Illustrious Citizen of the Department.

On May 11, on the occasion of the release of our book "Reminiscences Basque" held at the Museum, we gave a humble tribute on behalf of all Basques in Salto.

To her family and friends an affectionate hug, and to her an infinite gratitude.
