(the obituary was published here)

Lorenzo was born in Amayur, Navarra, Spain on April 12, 1934 and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 5, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Lorenzo was the 11th of 12 children born to Manuela Inda and Jelasio Echevere. Hard work was instilled in him at an early age,as he tended to the family livestock. In 1952 at the age of 18, he immigrated to America to herd sheep, eventually becoming partners with Juan Arrache of Lancaster. Together they formed the L and A Sheep Company, a partnership and friendship that lasted for more than 25 years.

In 1964 Lorenzo attended a Kern County Basque Club dinner and dance at the Amestoy Hotel, where he met the love of his life, Marie Jeanne Etcheverry-Othart. They were soon married and along with becoming a newlywed husband he also became “Aita” (Dad) to her two boys. His strong faith in God and his new family meant everything to him.

As much as he loved and missed the Basque Country, America was now his home. In 1961 he became a U.S. Citizen. He was very proud of his new citizenship, yet also remained true to the old traditions of his heritage. He especially enjoyed a good game of Mus (card game), watching Pala (handball), and traveling to many of the Basque festivals around the state.

Lorenzo retired from the sheep business in 1989 and moved to Bakersfield to be near his family. He enjoyed attending the activities and sporting events that his grandkids and great-grandkids were involved in. They truly were the light of his life.

Lorenzo was a kind man with a gentle soul. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Lorenzo is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie Jeanne, sons Dominic (Kathie) Othart, Bernard (Sallie) Othart, five grandchildren Janae (Mitch), Julie (Sean), Dominic (Diana), Elizabeth and Nicolas(Jacque), 12 great grandchildren, 2 sisters Javiera and Ascencion, along with many nieces and nephews both in Spain and America.

A Rosary Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate a life well livedwill be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 9:30am at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, located at 900 H St. Bakersfield, CA.
