1927 - 2017

Gabriel Urcaregui, 90, passed away on September 30, 2017 in Emmett, ID.

He was born on March 24, 1927 in Ispaster, Bizkaia Spain to Francisco Urcaregui and Nikolasa Careaga. Gabriel left school at an early age to help support his family. He worked in coal until he was drafted into the Spanish military. After his military service, he worked for another ten years as the head of his own charcoal operation before deciding to come to the United States. He herded sheep in Wyoming for a few years before moving to Idaho and working as a camp tender for 8 years. Gabriel then worked at the Boise Cascade mill for 19 years before retiring in 1989. Throughout his life Gabriel tended a garden, farmed and spent a lot of time with family and friends.

Gabriel enjoyed watching boxing matches and pelota, going to auctions, and getting together with his Basque friends. In his younger days, he was an avid bike rider and won several races. He rode a stationary bike and lifted weights for as long as he could to stay strong. Gabriel was an independent, strong, hardworking soul that will be missed by many.

Gabriel is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Vicenta, Miren, Maria Carmen and Felisa; and his brothers, Santi, Jose, Juan and Angel. He is survived by his sister, Juanita; brother, Rufino; sister-in-laws Barbara Urcaregui and JoAnn Urcaregui, and many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emmett. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM following the Rosary. Burial will follow in the Emmett Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett.

Memorials may be made to the Basque Cultural Center or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in memory of Gabriel.
