06/23/2017 - Bakersfield, CA, USA

It is with great sadness that the family of Edna Mae Coats announces her passing on Friday, June 23, 2017 at the age of 82.

Edna was born on May 13, 1935 in Lincoln, Arkansas to Raymond & Augustina Brown. At the age of 2 her family moved to the town her parents had met, Bakersfield, California. She graduated from East High School in 1953, out of which she stayed friends with numerous classmates her entire life. Edna raised three wonderful daughters, and was always known for her incredible work rate. Over the years, she held various positions in different industries. As her daughters became older she established herself in the restaurant industry. She always expressed how fortunate she was to work for two iconic Basque restaurants in Bakersfield, especially the wonderful 24 years she bartended at the Chalet Basque with JB & Marie Curutchague.

Edna was a flower and yard extraordinaire, avid reader of the local newspaper, head of her own local anti-graffiti unit, and deeply passionate about her Basque heritage. Throughout her life she participated in numerous organizations and charities but the Kern County Basque Club was her life long passion. Without any doubt her family was the most important aspect of her life. She always made herself available to help family, and complete strangers, in any time of need.

Edna is survived by her two siblings, Raymond Brown, and Marjorie Walden, three daughters, Claudette Hulsey (Stephen), Lisa Wiswell, and Dannette Blankenship, 6 Grandchildren, and 16 Great Grandchildren. Her parents, Raymond and Augustina Brown precede her in death.

Funeral service will be on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Hillcrest Mortuary at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the Kern County Basque Club Scholarship Foundation at 2301 S. Union Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93307 or to The American Cancer Society . The family would like to thank the entire ICU staff at San Joaquin Hospital for their dedication to helping Edna.
