This is the note the sent by the Gure Txokoa Basque Center of Córdoba City:

With deep sadness we have to inform the death of Prof. Dr. Alberto Maiztegui, who was a member, friend and unconditional collaborator of our Euskal Etxea. The renowned scientist died on Monday June 18 at 98 years of age.

Among many other things, its management was decisive for the National University of Córdoba to award in 2006 the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe, on the occasion of the National Basque Week in Córdoba, with Maiztegui also being the presenter of the Lehendakari at the moment of such honorable distinction.

Maiztegui was born on April 7, 1920 in Gualeguay, Entre Ríos. At age 7, he moved with his family to Buenos Aires. After graduationg in teaching, he decided to study mathematics teaching at the Higher Institute of Teachers Dr. Joaquin V. Gonzalez. Then, he decided to study physics and become assistant student of the physicist and writer Ernesto Sábato. At age 26, Maiztegui co-wrote with Sábato the book Elements of Physics. In 1947, Maiztegui devoted himself to research and began working at the Cordoba Astronomical Observatory, where he was able to study with renowned scientists such as Enrique Gaviola and Guido Beck. In 1949, he moved to Buenos Aires and began writing with the physicist Jorge Sábato, nephew of the writer, Introduction to Physics. The manual was published in 1952 with great success, being used in numerous schools in Latin America. After working for a time in Bariloche with José Balseiro, the physicist moved back to Córdoba to be a teacher at the Institute of Mathematics and Physics (IMAF), currently the FAMAF. There, he managed to become director of the institution.

Hoping that his family can overcome this unfortunate loss, we accompany them and we will keep forever his memory and friendship with the Gure Txokoa Basque Center in Córdoba.
