Ph.D. Student writes an opera about Basque whaling in Red Bay as his Ph.D. dissertation

Aiden Hartery, Ph.D. candidate at the Western University in London, Ontario is writing an opera about Red Bay and Basque whalers in the 16th Century for his Ph.D. dissertation. Hartery, who holds a BA in Music, as well as a Masters of Music Composition, is drawing on some of the oldest documents ever found in Canada, basing the opera on the story Juan Martinez de Larrume from Orio, Gipuzkoa.

Atlanta Euskal Etxea faced the bad weather and successfully completed its first public event

They called it “Udaberri Jaia” Spring Celebration, and spring in Atlanta often means rain.  With their event being held in the rain, organizers of the first public activity for the Atlanta Euskal Etxea (AEE) were very “happy and hopeful” with the response they received.  They were “reinforced” by the commitment expressed by those attending, 35 people of all ages who are already thinking about the club’s first projects.

“Bertso-Pilota” in Argentina: excellent evaluation of this tour that they haven’t ruled out repeating

Oihana Iguaran, Beñat Gaztelumendi, Iker Urmeneta, Iñaki Lizaso, Arkaitz Esnaola, Eneko Aizpitarte and Ekain Ormazabal in Viedma

For two weeks, this group of seven young bertsolaris and pilotaris from Euskal Herria has traveled through Argentina with their show “Bertso-Pilota.”  They were greeted in each city by members and friends of the corresponding euskal etxea, and they didn’t only perform “Bertso-Pilota” but they also put themselves at the disposition of each club to participate in other activities related to Basque culture.  Following is a chronicle and photos from the tour.

Basques all over the world commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika today in one voice with a clear message of peace

Exhibit “Remembering Gernika, 80 Years: a Basque Look from Uruguay,” inaugurated on Monday in Montevideo

The message will be manifested in multiple expressions: civil events, tributes, talks, exhibits…There will also be documentaries shown with images and testimonies, and reflection on the bombing.  Many euskal etxeas and Basque communities will commemorate today the anniversary, and other have held events prior, or will have them in the coming days.  We have gathered here some of the most significant events planned in Argentina and Uruguay to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika.

Irishman who fought in 1937 with the Basque Army against fascism remembered at 80th anniversary

The only Irishman known to have fought as a gudari (soldier) of the Basque army (Euzko Gudarostea) during the Spanish Civil War was remembered at an event in Dublin this weekend marking the 80th anniversary of the destruction of Gernika.
